Continuity Editing

  1. Continuity Editing is main style of camera work and editing for film's and video's. The purpose of this is to create smooth transition nicely into another shot, which makes the film appear to be happening in real time movement. Its used in TV and Films, Also normal video's. Its used for real time movements, helps create social realism.
  2. 180 Degree rule -
  3. This rule means the camera must stay on one side of the action and objects in the scene, There is a invisible line which shows where the camera goes along.
  4. This diagram shows exactly where the camera is:

  1. This is used so the audience never get confused with the positions of the characters. With the 180 degree rule the audience rarely experience's any sense of spacial disorientation. Continuity editing makes sure that no edit causes attention to itself, or makes the viewer feel confused or makes the shot inconsistent.
  2. Eye line match - is another important part of continuity editing, One shot shows the character looking off screen and the other shot shows what the character is looking at. This makes cuts look smoother.

  3. Cross cutting - Its used again to show smooth continuity. Cross cutting is where the camera will cut away from one action to another action, This shows that the scene are happening at the same time.
  4. Its used to build up suspense.

Here's a good example of Continuity editing. This clip from the film Tsotsi shows good examples of continuity, Eye Line match and 180 degree rule. Also shows cutaways.
