My Final Products

Theatrical Trailer -

Teaser Trailer -

Poster -

Billboard -

DVD Cover -

Film Magazine -

This is my final magazine, The reason for i have two it because in my audience feedback, someone said that my masthead could be interpreted into another 4 letter word if i put it behind her head. If i produced and distributed my magazine i would start off by putting the masthead in front of the model/actor and then as my magazine gains more brand identity, i can vary between putting the masthead in front and behind as the audience would know the magazine is called 'Flick'

Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Commentary for my two trailers -

For my trailer I used a canon camera. It was light weight making it easy to move around with the camera when changing location or taking hand held shots. For most of my shots I used a tripod, this was to keep the camera steady and allowed me to make smooth movement. An example of this is the panning at the start of both my Theatrical and my Teaser trailer and in other scenes of my Theatrical trailer.

I used loads of different locations for my trailer which is one the main conventions I have used and followed through out my trailer. This should draw audience's in as its a lot more interesting for the audience to watch. The main location I did use was Esther bedroom, This is where she finds the book, is seen reading the book or is upset about something she has caused because of the book. This tells the audience that this is the main location and used for the film and that the film is based around her and this book

I tried to change the lighting a lot in my trailer I had low key lighting for a lot of the shots inside and experimented with the saturation of the shots outside, to create an eery atmosphere. At the start, most of the shots are slightly brighter than the rest of the shots in the trailer, this is create a contrast for the shots after she finds the book. This created a dark and thrilling atmosphere which again shows how I've used and followed the conventions of my genre.
Editing to the beat of the non diegetic music I selected is also a main convention of all trailers that I wanted to use This makes my trailer seem more professional. The music I used also helps create an intense atmosphere which is created towards the end of the trailer because of the build up in the music towards the end.

The end of a trailer is the most dramatic part, as the start is the build up to what is going to happen at the end. For my trailer i wanted to follow this, by the end of my trailer you see Esther looking really distressed then the final bit is where she throws the book at the camera and the screen goes black. This links in with the music and makes the trailer have a more climatic ending.

My Teaser trailer is very much the same as my Theatrical trailer. I've cut it down to 60seconds, and I've only used shots showing all the main bit of action, The only bit that different to my Theatrical is the ending. For the ending I've followed the conventions again of  building up of all the action to creating a dramatic ending. But this time I've taken most of my shots and cut them too 1 or 2 seconds long, creating a fast montage which gets quicker and quicker towards the end. Also linking it to the music which makes it look even more dramatic.

Theorists also had a huge influence in my trailer, Mainly Levi Strauss's binary opposites as i want to show Past vs Future which is what the main narrative is about, also Love vs Hate is another theme of my trailer, as apart of the narrative is based around Esther and her boyfriend Cameron. The shot shown is where he turns on her, pushing her up against a wall, this is showing the hate Cameron now has for Esther, even though she still loves him, In a drama thriller these sort of binary opposites create all the action and conflict. Following his theory help me stick to my genre's conventions of needing a lot of drama and action. Todorov's narrative theory has also influenced my trailer. All film trailer conventions follow his theory of the 5 key narrative sequences when creating a trailer. These are Equilibrium, Dis Equilibrium, Recognition of the disruption and Repair. His final one is New Equilibrium however this isn't shown in a trailer otherwise it will reveal the ending. I followed this so my trailer would look more professional. I used the start of my trailer showing the Equilibrium of Esther living normal walking into her bedroom looking for something, Then the Dis Equilibrium is her finding the book and reading it and her recognition of the disruption is when she is trying to change what happens in the book but actually makes things worse for herself. Showing all this in my trailer draws the audience in more, making them want to know what else happens in the book and if she will stop trying to change the future.

My print products also use, challenge and develop conventions. My Poster uses all the conventions, which are Film title, actors names, slogan and production companies. I did this to keep it looking professional. The image i used shows both the significance of Esther and the book, which is another convention I've followed. One of the conventions i challenged was not adding the date of when the film is released, i did this as i didn't think it needed to and i didnt want to make my poster look messy.
I've used and followed all the conventions for my billboard, the same information on my poster but i also included the date. I did this as billboards attract a lot more attention so it was more important to include the release date. I have again used the conventions on my DVD cover i have included a variety of images and kept the same image i used for my poster to show continuity.I also added reviews which is seen in my teaser trailer, this will again attract audience. Finally my magazine front cover has also used all the conventions, such as Masthead, headline, coverline, p   ug, banner and issue number/date/website. One of the things i have challenged is the image, as there is no eye contact shown in the image, This is because all of the attention shouldn't be on her it should be on the book.

These are the conventions of real film print products

Question 3 - What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I created a survey asking audience members what they think of my trailer, print products and if they link together. I created this on survey monkey -

I posted the link to this on Facebook as I know I will get a lot of responses from my target audience.

I also tweeted the link, to get more responses.

Here are the responses i got back from survey monkey -

I also showed close friends and the actors from the trailer, and asked for feedback and if there is anything they would change or didn't like. (Feedback received from Facebook.)

In previous tasks i also asked for audience feedback on my plot idea's, fonts for company logo and film title. I used SurveyMonkey again and also did face to face interviews and recorded them or interviewed them.

My audience feedback through out my coursework has played a huge part in my construction of my print products and trailers.
when doing my research and planning i got feedback from my audience which helped my decide on what narrative i should go with, and what they would want to watch and, on which masthead/title they liked for my Film magazine, Film title and Production company title. Having there feedback helped me know what font style i should use which will attract my audience, As what they want is very important to my products as i want it all to appeal to them, so i create certain work depending on what my audience said.
Audience feedback after the construction of my products was really important as it had an impact on what i changed or adapted. An example of this is my magazine front cover image. I original had an image where Esther is looking at the book and not the camera, this challenged the conventions of a magazine and made mine different. A lot of my feedback said they liked it but thought it didn't look as good where there is no eye contact shown in my magazine as they felt like they couldn't connect with the actor and wasn't drawn in my the image. This led me to make the decision of re taking images and changing the image on my magazine front cover. (I did this post evaluation.)
The impact audience feedback had on my products was huge as it made me change my trailer and print products to appeal to them, which felt professional as its what real institution do.

Planning for more filming.

Date -  30th April
Time - 4pm - 6pm
Location - My House
Actors needed -  Georgia Waldron, Jackie Melia.
Shots -
Tracking Shot moving into Esther reading the book.
CU of Esther's eye's reading the book.
OSS of her reading the book.
ECU of the book, allowing the audience to read it.

Other Scene -
Panning LS of Esther walking to kitchen to mom.
OSS, Low Angle of Esther asking her mom what the book is.

Pages of the book -

Ive been watching trailers to help me with filming. I want to try and make the book seem more significant. A film called the Babdook does this. After watching this trailer several times i have noted down good point of where the book is shown and how they've used the camera shots to show inside the book and them reading it.

From the very beginning to 0.23s in, its all about the book and them reading it.  They use long shots of them reading it and also close ups to show facial expressions. I want to try and do shots like this.

Also at 0:47s to 0:52s where its shows more significance about the book and how she is in the book. I also want to do these short shorts like that, where the audience can read and see how Esther is involved in the book.

Bits of the book I've wrote -

(This is when Esther first discovers the book and she flicks to a random page.)

The highlighted section is the bit i've wrote, this is what the camera will focus on, the rest is random text so it looks more realistic.

Trailer Drafts

Editing Colour -

I've edited the colour to give the film more of a dark atmosphere. I like this a lot more and will use this now as my final trailer.

I've also changed the colour on my teaser trailer to keep the continuity.

Trailer Edits and Clips

Theatrical Trailer -
(Example's  - needs to be 1.5mins to 2 mins)

Teaser Trailer
(Less than 60s. Look for similar montage effect.)

This is my first try at putting all my clips together in a teaser trailer even though it is only 30 seconds long. I think the inter-titles are  to short, and i should add some more in. I also think i should make the montage a bit slower and show longer shots of the important scene's like Esther's boyfriend and her being bruised.

Now i have my music, i've started editing bit of my trailer to it.

Ending -
Im really pleased with how this has turned out, and how well it goes with the music. Im going to use this in both the Teaser Trailer and the Theatrical Trailer.

Mock Ups -

I don't like this one, I feel its too long as doesn't show all the drama that goes on in my film.

This one is a lot better and i think i will use most of this in my final trailer, however i want to add some more scenes of her friends warning her about the book and re-do one of the MCU's of Kate talking to Esther, this is because i dont like her swearing and it is also very similar to Gemma's one.

Editing shots into a montage.

In my trailer, i want a big section where there is a montage of shots showing action and all the bad things that happen to Esther in the book.
Here are some experiments on making the montage look good.

Soundtrack Permission

I've decided to look and try out a lot of different music for my trailer, so i want to ask permission for all the music i like, just incase.

(Same email used every time.)

I received a reply off SoundSoaps composer Patrick Jonsson -

This is the song i have requested to use, I feel like this has a good build up and the fast music would work very well with the montage.

Another one of his songs I want to use is 'Ape Quantum Giant' i sent him another email, asking permission to use this song as well

(This is the music.)

Now that i have permission to use these songs, i have changed my inter-titles to give credit to Patrick Jonsson (Soundsoap)

Im an going to use 'Ape Quantum Giant' as i think it would work a lot better for my trailer.

Editing sound.

In some parts of my trailer, i have shots that which include the actors swearing. This is to show how aggressive Esther's boyfriend is, however i don't want it to be heard. Ive now changed this by messing with the audio so it goes silent when he swears.

Shot's for Trailer

This will be used for the opening of my Trailer. As it shows Esther finding the book and asking her mom what it is. I wont use the whole scene for the trailer. However i think it has good shots.

This is another part of my Trailer, Where Esther is on the phone to Gemma telling her about this book. I again wont use this whole scene, but i think it will look good in a montage or a small part of the beginning of the trailer.
(This is two separate scene's. The fade to black shows when one ends and a new one starts.)

This is the ending of my trailer. I've edited it and added inter-titles.
I will use this in my trailer.

I've also taken extra shots of friends talking to Esther about either the book or her life in general. This is taken with one of Esther's friends Kate, who is a lot more mature than Esther. I will most likely use these two clips in my trailer.

I wanted some shots of Esther's friends shouting at her because of the book. I will use some of these as voice overs and some as normal shots.

One main shot i will use towards the end of my trailer is a scene between Esther and her boyfriend Cameron. This is before he beats her but this wont be obvious in the trailer to keep suspense. I want to edit his swearing out however not re-film as i want it to be shocking and also show the audience my film is intense and links to the age restriction of 15.

Script

I don't want loads of dialogue in my trailer for two reasons. 1. so i can have a voice over and 2. also so i can have music in the background.

Script for trailer:
Shots of Esther finding the book, Cuts to inter-titles.
Cuts to Esther and her mom
Esther - "Mom, what's this?"
Mom - "Nothing, its just an old book, Just put it back where you found it."
Shots of Esther reading the book in her room.
Esther - "Oh My God"

FaceTime to Gemma
Gemma - Hey Girl, Whats up?
Esther -  Gemma, I've found this book.
Gemma -  Wow. Is this all you've called me for.
Esther - No, Gemma you don't understand, Its about me!
Gemma - What?
Esther -  Its about my life, Your in it, My dad's death is in it!
Gemma -  Esther your still upset about this, your just looking for something to relate to.
Gemma Hangs up.

Inter-titles about how reading the book will only make things worse.
(If i use Voice Over, It starts here.)

Montage of shots, fading to black.
Katy: Esther, this book can not change the future!
More shots in montage
Gemma: Esther, Stop being so stupid a book can not predict the future.

Esther speaking directly to the camera holding the book open. Cut's from Voice over to Esther speaking directly to the camera.

Esther: The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine, for me it was in a book. Imagine reading into the future and knowing you were able to change it.
(Cuts from Voice over to Camera.) That's what i did and I've never regretted anything more.

Film Title appears.

StoryBoard

I created my storyboard on storyboardthat.com. This site allowed me to use cartoon images to create a storyboard, this was easy to create and made it seem a lot more professional than drawing out my images. This doesn't include the inter-titles. It also doesn't include information on lighting as i want to manipulate the lighting when editing.

Intertitles

I've been looking at more trailers, and watching what the inter-titles look like. I've noticed not many of them have a blank screen or one block colour, so i've decided to try and add  background which relates to my film.

I've decided to try out using the scribbles and writing background used on some of my posters and the cover of the book to see how that works and see if it holds a good effect.

I've made these inter-titles for what would seen through the the trailer. ( I might use these with a voice over.)

I've tried to include the background into the main title for my film. I want to try and see what it looks like if it fades into the background or fades to white, this will help me see what to use for my trailer.

I've tired adding the final shot into the title then fading to white, However it didn't work very well.

I also tired adding sound. I think this makes it look good however i dont like the sound i used as its one you can get on iMovie, so i will look for my own music to use.
